ISKA New York State Director Tom Sconzo has been named ISKA Man of the Year 2019 In recognition of his love of the sport and his dedication to expanding the International Sport Karate and Kickboxing Association’s ability to regulate combat sports in New York State and beyond. Tom was presented the award by pioneering Kickboxing Promoter Louis Neglia at Madison Square Garden.
Tom Sconzo fell in love with boxing and wrestling in middle school and went on to competing for Atlantic Veterans Memorial Boxing under Olympic coach Michael Murphy in USA Boxing events as well as the Golden Gloves in high school & college. It was in 1974 at CW.Post College that Tom was introduced to karate and began his training during the day with Sensei Richard Fields and in the evening with navy seal Master Robert Engle, student of Grand Master Henry Cho. Tom’s career on Wall Street as an International Financial Trader working and living in New York, Germany, Tokyo & Hong Kong, allowed him to train overseas with top instructors. One of Tom’s greatest influences came from the art of Sanuces as taught by Master Michael Deluca under Dr. Moses Powell and Chinese Goju taught by founder Shidoshi Ron Van Clief. Tom has received advance black belt rank from both masters over the last 40 years. Tom’s motivation & inspiration to grow beyond his martial arts training in to other areas of the arts from his fight coach & mentor Master Lou Neglia.
Tom is the founder of his school and fight team and has successfully promoted his own boxing & kickboxing shows in NY, Puerto Rico & St. Thomas. Although Tom has retired from kickboxing & Muay Thai full contact fighting, he still studies and competes regularly in BJJ & no-gi competition with the Renzo Gracie Competition Team.
Tom’s teaching philosophy was to prepare fighters who wish to compete in amateur and professional mixed martial arts, and kickboxing as well as those who wish to study self defense utilizing “modern day” techniques. The program included instruction in boxing, MMA, grappling, Muay Thai, ju jitsu and karate. Tom stressed the importance of good conditioning, diet and mental focus. He utilizes the tenets of martial arts to develop character, discipline, respect, confidence and courage.
In 2005 Master Sconzo retired from teaching full time and devoted his attention to officiating. He has inspected, judged & refereed over 2000 matches for sanctioning bodies and state athletic commissions all over the US as well as the Caribbean, Portugal, UK & South America. Master Sconzo also conducts seminars and advises on all aspects of event promotion and regulation.
In 2018 Tom accepted the position as ISKA New York State Director and through a combination of martial arts ethics, business acumen and remarkable leadership skills he has developed a program in support of dozens of quality promoters that positively impacts literally thousands of combat sport athletes.
